Schon in jungen Jahren erwachte die Neugier für alles, was mit Klängen so erzeugt werden kann. Nach einer kurzen Punk-Bandphase als Schlagzeuger, entdeckte Stefan Willenegger aka DJ Mastra die Möglichkeiten der Plattenspieler. Anfang der neunziger Jahre widmete sich Stefan, als dreizehnjähriger, fortan seiner wachsenden Leidenschaft für`s Djing. Sein Interesse galt nunmehr der elektronischen Tanzmusik, welche damals erst so richtig abging. Seines Alters wegen war ihm der Zugang zu Partys verwehrt, in dieser Zeit mixte sich Stefan seine Kassetten, welche er unter die Leute brachte. Mit dem Erlös kaufte er neue Platten.
Die Jahren vergingen, bis die Bekanntschaft mit Nik Leuenberger im Leben von DJ Mastra einiges änderte. Die beiden lernten sich 1994 kennen aufgrund eines Mixtapes. Nik erkannte das grosse musikalische Fingerspitzengefühl des jungen Djs, buchte ihn gleich für kleinere Partys unter dem Label „Bomb E“, welche vom typischen Acid-Sound der frühen Neunziger geprägt waren. Die Weichen waren somit gestellt und bald kriegte auch der Rest der Berner Szene Wind vom frischen Talent des jungen DJs.
Später, 1999 kam sein erster grösserer Zürcher Gig im Club Yellow, der damals im Supermarket beheimatet war. Veranstalter wie auch BesucherInnen waren begeistert. Bald war Mastra fester Yellow-Bestandteil und beliebter Resident. Im gleichen Jahr spielte er erstmals im legendären Tresor in Berlin, vier weitere Bookings folgten. Im Herbst erhielt er während seinen Ferien auf der Baleareninsel die Chance, im Sunset Café, im Hafen von Ibiza Stadt auflegen zu können.
Im Januar 2000 der erste Auftritt im Matrix (R.I.P.), weitere Bookings im Rohstofflagerund an diversen grösseren Veranstaltungen wie Energy etc.

2001 war für Mastra ein bewegtes Jahr. Der im März eröffnete Club Q ist zu seiner zweiten Heimat geworden. Dort legt er regemlässig mit nationalen und internationalen DJ’s wie Gogo, Steven S., Titto La Rocka, Carl Cox, Pascal Feos und anderen auf. Auch von den Via Felsenau – Ammonit Events ist er mittlerweile nicht mehr wegzudenken. Im selben Jahr lud ihn Titto sogar nach Cran Canaria ein, wo er mit ihm zusammen und DJ Gogo auflegte.
2002 spielte Stefan zusammen mit DJ Girl diverse Gigs in Brasilien.

Parallel zum Djing entwickelte er sich als Produzent eigener Tracks. Der Kontakt zu Marco Repetto gab ihm Auftrieb und Energie weiterzumachen um seine Kenntnisse im Soundprograming und Sequencing zu vertiefen.
Die „The Electronic Ceremony“ Veranstaltungen von Nik Leuenberger und Severin Aegerter, wirkten als Plattform und Katalysator für Stefan. Nebst wertvollen Erfahrungen lernte er die Inzec Crew näher kennen. Als Zusammenarbeit zwischen EC und Inzec Records entstand die Compilation „The Electronic Ceremony“ (inzec 011). Mastra debutierte erfolgreich mit dem deepen Track „Funkasie“ auf dieser Produktion. Der Kontakt zu Inzec intensivierte sich und nach gemeinsamen durchhören von vielen Tracks wurden Pläne geschmiedet wie es wohl für eine Veröffentlichung aussehen könnte. Man fand sich und im Februar 2004 erschien die „Foyer EP“ auf Inzec Records (inzec 018) mit 4 Tracks von Stefan.

Pläne geschmiedet wurde in der Zwischenzeit auch mit Sandro Ambrosi. Daraus entstand das Projekt Trauma Duo. Ihre Musik bewegt sich im Bereich Elektro/Ambient und wird im musikalischen Lebenslauf von Stefan bestimmt neuen Einfluss nehmen. Wir sind darauf gespannt...

Ever since he can remember, DJ Mastra has had a fascination for sounds and the ways in which they can be produced. After a short phase as a drummer in a punk band, Stefan Willenegger aka DJ Mastra discovered the turntable. As a thirteen year-old in the early nineties his passion for DJing quickly took hold and he relished the electonic dance music capturing the scene at the time. Because of his young age and therefore barred from parties, Stefan spent the time mixing cassettes which he later sold to finance new records.
And so it continued for several years until Nik Leuenberger stepped into his life and things began to change. They got to know each other in ’94 through one of Stefan’s tapes - Nik saw the great potential in the young DJ’s talent and booked him for small parties under the label ‘Bomb E’ which focused on the typical ‘acid sound’ of the time. Mastra’s reputation began to grow and he was soon known throughout the Bernese party scene.

Later in ’99, Mastra landed his first major gig at the Club Yellow in Zürich, which in those days was a venue in a supermarket. He impressed both the organizers and the public and soon became a popular fixture on Yellow’s agenda. That same year Mastra was booked at the legendary Tresor in Berlin...what was to be one night turned out to be five. While on a Balearic island holiday the following autumn he got the chance to play at the Sunset Café on Ibiza. In January 2000 he made his first appearance in Matrix (R.I.P) and later in the Rohstofflager and at several major events such as Energy.

2001 turned out to be an eventful year. The newly opened Club Q became Mastra’s second home where he performed with both local and internationally acclaimed DJ’s like Gogo, Steven S., Titto L Rocka, Carl Cox and Pascal Feos. He also became an integral part of the Via Felsenau-Ammonit Events. The same year he was invited to Gran Canaria to play with Titto and DJ Gogo. Various gigs in Brazil followed in 2002 where Stefan performed with DJ Girl.

During this time DJ Mastra was developing his skills as a producer. And his contact with Marco Repetto gave him the encouragement to deepen his knowledge of sound programming and sequencing. ‘The Electronic Ceremony’ events of Nik Leuenberger and Severin Aegerter worked as a catalyst for Stefan. Apart from gaining valuable experience he was also brought closer to the Inzec crew. On ‘The Electronic Ceremony’ compilation (inzec 011) – a collaboration between EC and Inzec Records – DJ Mastra made his successful debut with the profound track ‘Funkasie’. His ties to Inzec intesified and after the mutual listening through many tracks, ideas began to form for a solo record. An agreement was reached and in February ‘04 the ‘Foyer EP’ (018) was released featuring four of Stefan’s tracks.

In the meantime further plans have been made for the project ‘Trauma Duo’ together with Sandro Ambrosi. Their music moves in the sphere of Electro-Ambient and will surely have an impact on Stefan’s CV. You’ve been warned!
